The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party is mourning the passing of Mama Rose Kajwang’, the widow of the late Homa Bay Senator Gerald Otieno Kajwang’. The party confirmed her death on Thursday, October 30, 2025, following an illness.
In a statement shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, ODM expressed deep sorrow at the loss, extending condolences to the Kajwang’ family and the people of Suba North.
“We mourn the passing of Mama Rose Kajwang’, widow of the late Senator Gerald Otieno Kajwang’, earlier today after an illness. As the Orange family, we commiserate with the entire Kajwang’ family and the people of Suba North for the loss,” the statement read.
“May Rose’s soul rest in peace.”
Mama Rose was a respected academic and lecturer at Kenyatta University, where she also served as the head of the institution’s alumni body. Her leadership in academia earned her recognition as a mentor and an advocate for education, particularly in empowering women in leadership and public service.
Her passing marks a somber moment for one of the most politically influential families in the Nyanza region and within the ODM fraternity. Her late husband, Senator Gerald Otieno Kajwang’, was a founding member of ODM and a close ally of party leader Raila Odinga. Known for his famous slogan “Bado Mapambano,” Kajwang’ was celebrated for his passion, humour, and unwavering commitment to justice.
Following his death in November 2014, his brother, Moses Otieno Kajwang’, succeeded him as Homa Bay Senator and has since continued the family’s political legacy.
Mama Rose is remembered as a steadfast pillar who supported her family’s political journey while dedicating her life to nurturing education and leadership among Kenya’s youth.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Kajwang’ family in due course.
