The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is set for a crucial meeting next week as its National Governing Council (NGC) convenes in Mombasa to formally ratify the appointment of Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga as the party’s substantive leader.
The high-level meeting, scheduled for Thursday, November 13, 2025, comes ahead of the party’s 20th anniversary celebrations. Over 450 NGC members have been invited to attend the special sitting, whose agenda focuses on ratifying recent appointments to key party positions.
Makadara MP George Aladwa, who also serves as ODM’s Nairobi County Chairman, confirmed the meeting, saying members would arrive in Mombasa early for the event. “We will be in Mombasa on the evening of Thursday, November 13, to ratify the appointment of party officials, including Dr. Oburu as our substantive leader,” Aladwa stated.
Dr. Oburu was appointed acting party leader on October 16, 2025, by the National Executive Council (NEC), a day after the passing of his brother, who had led ODM since its inception. His appointment was later endorsed by the party’s Central Management Committee (CMC) during a meeting in Nairobi last week.
“This being the first meeting of the committee since the passing of the party leader, the top organ endorses Hon. Dr. Oburu Oginga as the new party leader and urges the party rank and file to support him,” ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna said.
Among other officials expected to be confirmed are deputy party leaders Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, and Kisii Governor Simba Arati. Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga will also be confirmed as the substantive party chairperson, replacing John Mbadi, who joined the Cabinet as Treasury CS in August last year.
The Mombasa meeting is expected to set the stage for a new leadership era within the ODM as it marks two decades of political influence in Kenya’s multiparty democracy.
