Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has stepped down as Vice-Chair of the Council of Governors (CoG) following public outrage and political pressure from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) over his remarks regarding the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
A video that went viral showed Kahiga speaking in vernacular at a burial in Nyeri, implying that Raila’s death would free up government resources for the Mt Kenya region. His comments sparked nationwide condemnation, with many viewing them as insensitive and celebratory.
ODM, led by Chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, quickly condemned Kahiga’s remarks, calling them “reckless, shameful, and politically motivated.” Addressing a press conference on October 22, 2025, Wanga accused Kahiga of acting as a political mouthpiece for Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, claiming that the remarks were part of a coordinated effort to mock Raila.
“Kahiga does not speak for himself; he is the spokesperson of Rigathi Gachagua,” Wanga said, demanding his immediate resignation from CoG.
The backlash intensified as both ODM leaders and members of the public called for disciplinary action. The Council of Governors also hinted at taking steps against him, increasing pressure on Kahiga to act.
In response, the Nyeri governor issued a public apology to Raila’s family, ODM supporters, and Kenyans. He clarified that his comments were misunderstood and were not meant to celebrate Raila’s passing.
“I sincerely apologise to the Odinga family, the Luo nation, and Kenyans at large for any harm caused,” Kahiga said.
Taking full responsibility for his words, Kahiga announced his resignation from CoG with immediate effect, saying it was the honourable thing to do.
Raila Odinga, who died of cardiac arrest on October 15, 2025, while receiving treatment in India, was laid to rest on October 19, 2025, in his Bondo home.
