Mombasa Governor and ODM Deputy Party Leader Abdulswamad Nassir has called on party officials to set aside internal differences and rally behind the party’s candidates ahead of upcoming by-elections in Kenya.
Speaking at a town hall meeting in Mambrui, Magarini Constituency, Kilifi County, Governor Nassir emphasized the importance of discipline, solidarity, and strategic coordination within the party.
“These virtues are especially vital as ODM fields candidates across multiple regions and faces heightened political competition,” he said, urging leaders at all levels to intensify mobilisation and strengthen the party’s visibility as the polls approach.
Governor Nassir praised grassroots supporters for their unwavering commitment to ODM and warned that members pursuing divisive agendas would face consequences. “Divisive politics and personal feuds undermine our mission and weaken the confidence of our supporters,” he added.
The call for unity comes shortly after the passing of ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga in mid-October, a moment that has prompted reflection among officials and supporters keen to honor his legacy of resilience, democratic ideals, and commitment to justice.
Despite internal debates, optimism remains high in ODM strongholds, with local structures intensifying campaign efforts ahead of the by-elections. Governor Nassir expressed confidence that a united ODM would secure decisive victories and emerge stronger.
However, internal wrangles have emerged since Raila’s passing. Some members have expressed support for President William Ruto’s government, while others remain opposed, highlighting the need for reconciliation. The succession debate intensified after a petition by ODM life members sought the removal of Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga as acting party leader, citing alleged constitutional breaches.
Oburu Oginga, however, dismissed calls for his removal, asserting his appointment was a collective decision and pledging to maintain party unity. “Those imagining they can break ODM it will never happen. In my hands, ODM will not be divided,” he said.
As ODM approaches the by-elections, its ability to navigate succession concerns, maintain discipline, and mobilize supporters will be crucial in determining its performance, with leaders like Governor Nassir central to preserving party cohesion and honoring Raila Odinga’s legacy.
