Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has reiterated that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) remains committed to fighting for justice and development, even as it participates in President William Ruto’s broad-based government. Speaking during a political event, Wanga, who also chairs the ODM party, dismissed accusations of betrayal, emphasizing that the party’s decision to work with Kenya Kwanza was made under the direction of ODM leader Raila Odinga.
“We have no apologies to make. We are firm, we are fierce, and we will continue to stand for the people but from within the broad-based government,” Wanga said. She stressed that the party’s identity as a defender of social justice remains intact and that working within government offers a strategic platform to push for national progress.
Highlighting the historical struggles for justice, Wanga noted that many ODM supporters have sacrificed for a more equitable Kenya. “Our children have been killed on these streets fighting for social justice in this country. We will continue to fight, but from within,” she stated.
Wanga also dismissed internal opposition criticism, claiming their discomfort stems from increased development projects in ODM strongholds like Nyanza. “The biggest problem for some of these people is not even President Ruto. Their issue is that the ODM party and particularly our community is being included in development,” she said. She accused Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of resenting projects directed to regions like Nyanza.
She asserted that all Kenyan regions regardless of political affiliation deserve equal development. “Raila’s strongholds in the Coast, Western, Turkana, Samburu, and elsewhere are part of Kenya and are entitled to development like every other part of this country,” she affirmed.
Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo supported Wanga’s position, saying ODM would not be drawn into personality-driven political feuds. She rejected claims that cooperation with Kenya Kwanza was about political rewards. “When you see roads being tarmacked here, that is not ‘eating.’ That is basic development we have lacked since independence,” she said.
The leaders reiterated that ODM’s collaboration with the government is grounded in principle, not opportunism.
