Cabinet Secretaries have announced a raft of new appointments, revoking several others in what appears to be a major realignment of government boards and authorities.
Among the most high-profile changes is the revocation of Odoyo Owidi’s appointment as Chairperson of the Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency. Owidi, a vocal defender of the Kenya Kwanza administration on TV talk shows, was replaced by Daniel Omino, who has been appointed to the position for a three-year term by Water and Irrigation CS Eric Muriithi. Owidi, once a member of the ODM party, had resigned ahead of the 2022 general election, citing lack of transparency, and became one of the early Luo Nyanza leaders to support President William Ruto.
In other changes, Energy and Petroleum CS Opiyo Wandayi appointed Martha Nyangwaria to the Board of Directors of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) and Anne Michura to the Board of the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency, both for three-year terms beginning May 16, 2025.
Education CS Julius Migosi appointed Eugene Masombo to the Board of Trustees for the President’s Award, while Agriculture CS Mutahi Kagwe made two appointments to the Kenya Animal Genetics Resource Centre Wario Yattani as a new member and George Odhiambo Oballa for a renewed term.
Blue Economy CS Hassan Joho appointed Francis Njoroge to the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute, while Information and Communications CS William made three new appointments to the ICT Authority Board Leah Manyarkiy, Christopher Naicca, and Dominic Wambugu while revoking the appointments of Annette Mutuku, Alfred Ngeno, and Michael Wachira.
Further appointments include Jackson Mwenda to the Regional Centre on Groundwater Resources by CS Muriithi; Abdullahi Nur Sheikh to the National Heroes Council by newly appointed Gender CS Hanna Cheptumo; and Beatrice Godana to the National Drought Management Authority by East African Community CS.
The shake-up reflects a broad effort to align key institutions with the administration’s current policy and political priorities.
