The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has joined Kenyans in mourning the death of Hon. Justice Fredrick Ochieng Andago. The Court of Appeal judge passed away leaving behind a legacy of integrity, reform, and service to the Judiciary.
ODPP’s Tribute
Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson M. Ingonga described Justice Andago as a “distinguished jurist” whose work shaped Kenya’s legal system. In his condolence message, Ingonga expressed heartfelt sympathies to the judge’s family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Judiciary.
He praised Justice Andago for his “deeply reasoned judgments” in criminal law, noting that they strengthened the rule of law and inspired future generations of legal minds.
Career of Service
Before joining the Court of Appeal, Justice Andago served as a High Court judge. His integrity, diligence, and commitment to justice earned him wide respect across the legal profession.
Beyond his courtroom role, he strongly supported alternative dispute resolution (ADR). At the time of his passing, he chaired the Court Annexed Mediation Taskforce, where he led reforms aimed at promoting mediation as a faster and more affordable way of resolving disputes.
“The passing is a profound loss not only to his family and colleagues but also to the Judiciary, the legal profession, and the nation as a whole,” said Ingonga.
Judiciary’s Mourning
Chief Justice Martha Koome also sent her condolences, describing Justice Andago as a “towering figure” in the Judiciary. She recognised his role in strengthening commercial law jurisprudence and acknowledged his dedication to reforms that improved access to justice.
A Lasting Legacy
Justice Andago will be remembered as a jurist who combined intellectual depth with compassion. His contributions to criminal law, commercial law, and mediation reforms will continue to guide Kenya’s Judiciary for years to come.
