Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has officially unveiled his new political party, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), marking a major step in his bid for the presidency in 2027. The launch, held in Lavington, Nairobi, on May 15, 2025, featured a spirited showcase of political music, with rallying songs in both English and Kiswahili calling on Kenyans to unite against economic hardship and poor governance.
Under the slogan Skiza Wakenya (Listen to Kenyans), DCP has introduced a fresh tone in political messaging, blending secular and gospel influences with themes of liberation, justice, and public accountability. One Kiswahili anthem roused supporters with the words: “Komboa payslip, Okoa Wakenya, Unganisha Kenya!” a direct appeal to Kenyans grappling with high taxes and a strained economy.
Another song declared: “DCP ni mwamko mpya, utaboresha afya na itaokoa payslip ya Wakenya, itamliza ufisadi, uongozi wa kuaminika!” The chants underscored the party’s promise of reliable leadership, anti-corruption efforts, and economic relief.
Gachagua, who resigned from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) on May 12, said DCP is a response to the public’s growing frustrations. He emphasized inclusivity in an interview with Egesa FM, highlighting appointments from diverse regions across Kenya to counter claims of tribalism. “Those calling me a tribalist will be shocked,” he said.
The party’s colours green, brown, and black symbolize its grassroots appeal, while its logo, a hand touching an ear, reflects its commitment to “listening to the ground.” Its official slogan is Kazi na Haki (Work and Justice).
DCP’s governing council includes representatives from across the country, such as Thomas Ratemo, Mably Owino, and Joy Gatugi, positioning the party as a national movement.
While the full party launch is set for a later date, Gachagua’s unveiling of DCP signals the start of a focused campaign to consolidate support, particularly in the vote-rich Mt. Kenya region, as the 2027 election cycle begins to take shape.
