Kenyans have rallied in overwhelming numbers to support the family of slain social media influencer and teacher Albert Ojwang, following a heartfelt appeal launched by activist and comedian Eric Omondi.
The fundraiser, initiated on the evening of Tuesday, June 10, 2025, has seen incredible response from members of the public, with Meshack Opiyo Ojwang’s father hitting the Sh500,000 daily transaction limit on his M-Pesa account just hours after the appeal went live. The amount, which marks Safaricom’s cap for daily mobile money transactions, reflects the outpouring of grief and solidarity from Kenyans touched by the tragic story.
Albert Ojwang died in police custody under circumstances that have sparked national outrage and renewed calls for justice and police accountability. In the wake of his death, attention has turned to the welfare of his young son, aged just three.
“Let’s stand with Baba Albert. Albert left behind a three-year-old son let’s ensure he never lacks anything. May he grow up knowing his father died a hero,” Omondi posted on X (formerly Twitter), appealing to Kenyans to help secure a better future for the boy.
As donations poured in and Opiyo’s line reached its limit, Omondi promptly shared an alternative Safaricom number linked to Pochi la Biashara to keep the flow of contributions going.
The emotional appeal was amplified by Omondi’s massive social media following, drawing support from ordinary citizens, celebrities, and digital influencers. Many shared the message, further accelerating the campaign’s momentum ahead of Ojwang’s burial.
On Tuesday night, Omondi was seen at Chiromo Hospital alongside Ojwang’s father. Videos circulating online captured a moving moment as Omondi embraced the grieving father and offered a prayer outside the morgue, following a postmortem conducted at City Mortuary earlier that day.
Omondi has earned national recognition for spearheading charitable campaigns in the past. His leadership in this latest effort underscores his commitment to humanitarian causes and to ensuring that Ojwang’s young son has a future filled with hope, not hardship.
