A tragic road accident in Githurai, Nairobi, claimed the life of one person and left several others injured on Wednesday morning, highlighting ongoing concerns over road safety and vehicle maintenance in Kenya’s urban transport system.
According to Kasarani Sub-County Police Commander Emmanuel Rono, the incident occurred when a Thika-bound matatu lost its brakes while navigating through the busy Githurai area. The vehicle, which was travelling from Nairobi’s central business district, veered off course and collided with a motorcycle carrying a pillion passenger.
Rono confirmed that one person died in the crash, while three passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital. Nine others, who suffered minor injuries, also received medical attention at the same facility.
Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing moments leading up to the crash. Local resident John Kariuki, who spoke to Inooro TV, said the matatu appeared to be speeding and unable to slow down as it approached a crowded section of the road.
“The matatu was coming from town heading towards Thika. Upon reaching Githurai, it hit a motorcycle that had a woman and a few items, including goat heads,” Kariuki explained.
He added that the impact threw the motorcyclist to the ground, but the woman was caught underneath the matatu. “We lifted the vehicle and pulled her out, but it appeared she had already died,” he said.
Emergency services, including police and paramedics, arrived promptly at the scene to assist the injured and restore order in the congested area. The body of the deceased was taken to the city mortuary.
The incident has sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement of vehicle maintenance regulations, especially for public service vehicles. Authorities have since launched an investigation into the crash, focusing on the mechanical condition of the matatu and whether it had undergone recent inspection.
“This is a tragic reminder of the importance of road safety and ensuring that all vehicles on our roads are in proper working condition,” said Commander Rono.
As the investigation continues, police have urged all drivers to exercise caution and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before operating them on busy routes.
