Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has made a passionate appeal for Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to be part of a broad-based government, emphasizing the need for national unity and inclusivity as Kenya approaches the 2027 elections.
Speaking during a political gathering in Machakos County on Monday, June 16, Wandayi described Kalonzo as a “respected national leader” who has already demonstrated his dedication to the country. He urged the government to embrace Kalonzo and ensure that the Kamba community is not sidelined from the national political discourse.
“We cannot afford a situation where Kenyans are heading into a serious political moment and the Kamba people are left behind. That would be unacceptable,” Wandayi stated, praising the community as loyal, patriotic, and instrumental in Kenya’s democratic journey.
Wandayi used a vivid metaphor to illustrate Kalonzo’s readiness for leadership, saying, “Kalonzo has washed his hands, washed his face, and even washed his clothes he is ready. He must be brought into the fold.”
The CS’s remarks are part of growing efforts by government-aligned leaders to woo Kalonzo into joining the administration. However, Kalonzo remains steadfast in his opposition stance.
A day earlier, during a church service in Ngong’, Kalonzo rejected overtures from Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, referring to the government as “blood-based” and accusing it of lacking sincerity. He criticized Kindiki for failing to apologize for the deaths of protesters during his tenure as Interior Minister and for the recent killing of activist Albert Ojwang’.
“I will work with the truthful man called Gachagua,” Kalonzo affirmed, reiterating his alliance with the former Deputy President in the push to unseat the current regime.
In response, Kindiki declined to engage in a war of words, maintaining that he respects Kalonzo despite their political differences.
“I won’t answer him back publicly not because I can’t, but because I don’t engage in public duels with people I respect,” Kindiki posted on X.
The political tug-of-war highlights deepening divisions even as leaders call for unity and inclusivity in national governance.
