Siaya Governor James Orengo has taken a markedly different tone towards President William Ruto, months after publicly calling for his resignation. The governor, who has been one of the fiercest critics of the Kenya Kwanza administration, on Sunday, August 31, warmly welcomed the Head of State at St Peter’s ACK Cathedral in Siaya County.
In his address, Orengo praised the President for what he described as tangible development in the county. He cited the ongoing construction of a 20,000-seater stadium and the establishment of a new referral hospital in Siaya as proof that Ruto had the region’s interests at heart.
“Your Excellency, I want to allay the fears for those who think you don’t have Siaya in your heart. Last week, I talked to you and you confirmed that on October 16, you are again coming to Siaya,” Orengo remarked.
The governor went on to reveal that part of his softened stance was influenced by ODM leader Raila Odinga, who had urged him to ensure Ruto was received cordially in Siaya. “Last night, Raila rang me and urged me to ensure the people of Siaya receive you well. And as you know, when Baba says right, we go right. When he says left, we go left,” Orengo told the congregation, drawing laughter and applause.
In addition, Orengo announced that Siaya will host the Siaya International Trade & Investment Conference (SITICO 2025) in October, with President Ruto expected as the chief guest. The event, themed “Positioning Siaya as an Investment Destination: Transformative Growth through Trade and Investment,” will feature keynote addresses, exhibitions, B2B deal rooms, and site visits to flagship projects.
The governor’s remarks mark a dramatic shift from July when he told a rally in Bondo that Ruto had failed Kenyans and should resign, citing public anger over the government’s policies.
Observers note that Orengo’s latest posture may signal a broader realignment in Luo Nyanza politics, where Raila Odinga’s word remains decisive. For now, the once combative county chief appears ready to work with the national government in pursuit of development.
