Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has come under intense criticism following a viral video in which he appeared to suggest that the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga would “free” government resources for the Mt Kenya region.
Speaking in vernacular at a funeral in Nyeri, Kahiga claimed that the government had shifted attention and resources to Nyanza due to President William Ruto’s working relationship with Raila before his death on October 15 in India. His comments, however, sparked a national uproar, with many accusing him of politicizing a moment of grief.
Trade Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui condemned the remarks as “regrettable and most unfortunate,” saying they reflected “a narrow mindset that thrives on isolation.” The ODM Party urged prayers for Kahiga to seek forgiveness, while Senator Samson Cherargei called the statements “ungodly, un-African, and uncouth.”
Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi also weighed in, warning Kahiga against inflaming ethnic tensions, terming the remarks “irresponsible and reckless.”
Governor Kahiga has yet to issue a public apology as calls mount for him to retract his comments and apologize to the Odinga family, the Luo community, and the nation at large.
