Police in Kiambu County moved swiftly on Wednesday morning to clear a bonfire lit by unknown individuals at the Mama Ngina stage in Kinoo, an incident that disrupted traffic along a busy route. The fire, reportedly fueled by tyres and other flammable materials, produced thick black smoke that billowed into the air, creating visibility challenges for motorists and pedestrians alike.
The bonfire is believed to have been part of early protest activity ahead of the anticipated Gen-Z-led demonstrations scheduled to take place across the country. Video footage circulating online shows the flaming debris occupying the center of the road, with drivers struggling to maneuver past the obstruction.
Anti-riot police arrived at the scene and extinguished the flames before removing the debris to restore normal traffic flow. Their swift intervention helped to prevent the situation from escalating further, as tension remained high in the lead-up to planned nationwide protests.
The Kinoo incident is one of several signs of unrest reported across parts of the country as young Kenyans mobilize to voice their frustration over governance and economic issues. Today’s demonstrations also mark the anniversary of the June 25 protests, with organisers calling for peaceful action in multiple towns, including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Eldoret.
In the capital, police heightened security around key government installations, including State House and Parliament. Razor wire barriers were erected on several roads leading to these sensitive locations, and officers were seen stopping and questioning motorists and pedestrians attempting to access the areas.
Some Nairobi residents reported being turned back by police while trying to commute to work, prompting public concern over accessibility and movement during the protests.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, accompanied by top police commanders, toured parts of Nairobi and visited the Inspector General’s office at Jogoo House to assess the situation on the ground. Murkomen reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order, while urging protesters to remain peaceful and respect the law.
Authorities have promised a firm but restrained approach to the demonstrations, as Kenya braces for yet another wave of Gen-Z activism calling for accountability, reform, and better leadership.
