Migori County is in mourning following the fatal stabbing of a police officer attached to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) in Muhurubay. The officer, identified as Gilbert Kibet, lost his life on Thursday night after being attacked by a civilian outside Genasa Bar and Restaurant in Muhuru Town, located in Nyatike South Sub-County.
According to an incident report filed by the police, the officer was off duty and was on his way home at around midnight when he was ambushed by the suspect. The assailant, known only by the alias Boy, allegedly stabbed Kibet on the left side of his neck. Kibet succumbed to his injuries while being rushed to a nearby health facility.
Confirming the tragic incident, Nyatike South Deputy County Commissioner Festus Kimeu stated that the motive behind the attack remains unclear. “The motive behind the killing is yet to be established, and investigations are underway,” Kimeu told reporters on Friday.
Authorities have since launched a manhunt for the suspect, who fled the scene immediately after the stabbing. Officers are appealing to members of the public to come forward with any information that could aid in apprehending the suspect.
The body of the deceased has been moved to Migori County Referral Hospital, where a postmortem examination will be conducted as part of the ongoing investigations.
The death of Officer Kibet has sparked outrage and sadness among colleagues and residents of Muhuru Town, many of whom described him as a disciplined and approachable law enforcement officer. The incident has also raised concerns over the safety of officers, even while off-duty, and the rising trend of violent crimes in social spaces like bars and restaurants.
As police continue their search for the suspect and piece together the events that led to the brutal killing, the community is left grappling with shock and grief. Authorities are urging calm and patience as investigations proceed, assuring the public that justice will be served.
