Tensions flared in Nairobi’s Central Business District on Wednesday as initially peaceful demonstrations turned chaotic, culminating in a dramatic rescue of a female police officer who had become isolated during confrontations between anti-riot police and protesters.
The unrest, part of the ongoing Gen-Z-led demonstrations sweeping across Kenya, intensified along Kenyatta Avenue and Moi Avenue by midday. Protesters, who had gathered to voice concerns over governance and economic conditions, clashed with police officers attempting to disperse the crowds.
In a scene that was captured on video and widely circulated on social media, a policewoman found herself cornered by an angry crowd. According to eyewitnesses, the officer had been part of a dispersal unit before becoming separated from her team amid the confusion and aggressive chants. Protesters hurled stones at her and other officers, forcing a retreat as the situation spiraled out of control.
Just as the crowd appeared to close in on her, a police truck carrying a backup team of anti-riot officers arrived on the scene. The officers quickly formed a protective ring around their colleague, shielding her from harm and escorting her to safety. The timely intervention is believed to have saved her life.
Elsewhere in the CBD, protesters erected makeshift barricades and engaged police in running battles. Tear gas filled the air as police attempted to regain control, while some officers were seen throwing stones back at the demonstrators. The confrontations led to temporary paralysis of business operations in parts of the city center.
The Gen-Z-led protests, characterized by digital coordination and widespread youth participation, have intensified in recent weeks. Demonstrators are demanding systemic reforms, accountability, and economic justice.
Despite the government’s call for calm and dialogue, the protests have continued to grow in size and intensity, reflecting widespread public dissatisfaction. Wednesday’s incident underscores the volatile atmosphere and the urgent need for de-escalation to prevent further injuries or fatalities.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the incident involving the policewoman, but security forces remain on high alert as demonstrations persist across the country.
