Kenya’s founding father, the late President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, has been posthumously honoured by Angola for his enduring Pan-African legacy. The prestigious award, under the Honour Class, was presented on Thursday, November 6, 2025, during Angola’s 50th Independence anniversary celebrations held in Luanda.
The award was received on behalf of the Kenyatta family by Muhoho Kenyatta. During the ceremony, he highlighted the significance of the recognition. “This prestigious award serves as a powerful reminder of the Pan-African ideals that Mzee Jomo Kenyatta championed, a vision of a united, free, and self-determined Africa,” he said.
Muhoho Kenyatta added that Jomo Kenyatta’s support for Angola’s liberation movement was rooted in his belief that “the destiny of all African nations is interconnected.” The posthumous award recognises the late leader’s outstanding contributions to Africa’s struggle for freedom and his lasting influence on the continent’s political landscape.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, in a statement on November 8, affirmed that the award celebrates the deep historical ties and shared struggle for independence between Kenya and Angola. He emphasized that the recognition would further strengthen the diplomatic relations between the two nations.
“This recognition, which also included other key African figures, strengthens the fraternal ties between the two nations and celebrates a common history of overcoming colonialism,” Uhuru Kenyatta said. He also extended congratulations to the people of Angola on their Golden Jubilee, wishing them continued peace and prosperity.
The ceremony in Luanda also honoured prominent African leaders from countries such as Algeria, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Ghana. The award highlights the importance of continental solidarity and commemorates leaders who have championed Africa’s unity and independence.
This posthumous honour cements Jomo Kenyatta’s legacy as a visionary Pan-Africanist, ensuring that his contributions to Africa’s liberation and unity continue to be celebrated across the continent.
