The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a “distinguished statesman of the African continent.”
In a heartfelt message of condolence, Youssouf said he learned of Odinga’s passing “with profound sadness,” extending sympathies on behalf of the African Union, its organs, and institutions. He hailed Raila as “a towering figure in Kenya’s political life and a steadfast champion of democracy, good governance, and people-centred development.”
Youssouf praised Odinga’s decades-long dedication to justice, pluralism, and reform, saying his leadership left an indelible mark on both Kenya and the wider African continent. “He inspired generations of leaders, including myself, through his courage, resilience, and unwavering belief in dialogue and democratic institutions,” he added.
Raila Odinga, a central figure in Kenya’s politics for more than four decades, served as Prime Minister between 2008 and 2013. He also held the position of African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa, where he played a pivotal role in promoting the continent’s integration and connectivity agenda.
“Odinga’s contributions extended far beyond national borders,” Youssouf noted, highlighting his efforts in advancing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and driving socio-economic transformation across the continent.
Describing him as one of Africa’s most “visionary sons,” the AU Chairperson said Odinga’s life embodied the pursuit of justice, democracy, and unity.
The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) also paid tribute to Raila, with Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu calling him an unwavering Pan-Africanist whose struggle for freedom and equality inspired generations.
“IGAD stands with the people and Government of Kenya in this moment of profound sorrow. His legacy will forever echo in the democratic foundations he helped build,” Gebeyehu said.
Both AU and IGAD described Odinga’s legacy as one that will continue to inspire hope and unity across Africa.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
