Bishop Emeritus Rt. Rev. Philip Anyolo Sulumeti, a respected Catholic leader in Kenya, has passed away at the age of 88. He died at Nairobi Hospital on November 9, 2025, at 11 pm.
The Catholic Diocese of Kakamega confirmed the news, with Bishop Joseph Obanyi urging the faithful to keep the late bishop in their prayers as burial arrangements are prepared.
“I request you to keep him in prayers, remembering him in the masses, as we begin making arrangements for his burial, which shall be communicated in due course,” Bishop Obanyi said. He extended condolences to Sulumeti’s family, friends, and the people of Kakamega.
Born on August 15, 1937, Sulumeti was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Kisumu on January 6, 1966. His leadership journey in the Church began in 1972 when he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Kisumu and Titular Bishop of Urci, and later became Bishop of Kisumu in 1976. On February 28, 1978, he was appointed the first Bishop of Kakamega.
During his nearly four decades of service in Kakamega, Bishop Sulumeti was known for his humility, steady temperament, and commitment to community development. He championed Catholic-sponsored schools, promoted education for both boys and girls, and supported initiatives in agriculture, health, and self-help programs.
Sulumeti was also a respected voice in peacebuilding, human dignity, and good governance, earning admiration for uniting clergy, laity, and local leaders in advancing social and spiritual cohesion.
He retired on December 5, 2014, leaving behind a legacy defined by service, mentorship, and development. The institutions he nurtured and the leaders he guided continue to reflect his enduring influence.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Diocese of Kakamega in due course.
