The Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) has officially nominated Seth Panyako as its candidate for the Malava constituency parliamentary by-election scheduled for November 27.
Panyako, who also serves as the Secretary-General of the Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN), is seeking to succeed the late Malulu Injendi, whose passing earlier this year left the seat vacant. His nomination was announced after he emerged as the coalition’s preferred flagbearer, securing significant support across all seven wards of Malava.
The party views the Malava contest as more than just a by-election, framing it as an important test of political strength and a precursor to the 2027 general election. According to party leaders, scientific data and structured consultations guided the choice of Panyako, a move they say will strengthen the opposition coalition’s chances in upcoming national contests.
Panyako’s nomination is expected to consolidate the party’s presence in Western Kenya. The leadership has urged coalition partners to rally behind him, emphasizing unity as a critical factor in winning the seat. In particular, they have called upon youthful voters—especially members of Generation Z—to turn out in large numbers and register with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) ahead of the by-election.
Supporters of the candidate argue that his professional background and experience position him as a strong choice to represent Malava in Parliament. As a union leader, he has long been associated with advocating for better working conditions and policies in the health sector, which some believe will translate into effective representation for constituents.
However, Panyako’s candidacy has not been without controversy. A petition filed by rival aspirant Caleb Burudi has sought to challenge his eligibility. The petition contends that Panyako failed to resign from his position as a board member of the Local Authorities Pension Trust (LAPFUND) within the legal timelines required after the parliamentary seat was declared vacant on August 8. According to the claim, he should have stepped down by August 15 to qualify for the race.
Despite the legal challenge, DAP-K remains confident in Panyako’s eligibility and determination to represent Malava. The by-election, therefore, promises to be both a political showdown and a test of unity within the opposition coalition as they prepare for the larger electoral battles that lie ahead
