Belgut MP Nelson Koech, who chairs the National Assembly Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations Committee, on Tuesday held high-level talks with Dr. Ed Bernett, the Acting British High Commissioner to Kenya. The meeting reaffirmed Kenya and the United Kingdom’s shared commitments in security, trade, and development as the two nations prepare to roll out the Kenya–UK Strategic Partnership (2025–2030).
Koech described the talks as cordial and productive, noting the “historic and enduring ties” between Nairobi and London. He said the partnership, signed in July by President William Ruto and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, provides a roadmap for deeper collaboration in governance, green growth, and trade.
“One of our key discussions was on how to implement the Strategic Partnership effectively. This framework provides a five-year plan that should deliver tangible benefits to our citizens,” Koech said.
Security was a key focus of the discussions, with both sides emphasizing the importance of the Kenya–UK Security Compact. Koech said the compact will help address emerging challenges such as cybersecurity threats, irregular migration, and illicit financial flows.
On defence, the MP underscored the significance of the Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA), which enables UK military training in Kenya. He, however, stressed that the agreement must be implemented in line with Parliament’s recommendations to safeguard Kenya’s sovereignty.
Beyond defence and security, the talks explored opportunities in trade, investment, renewable energy, environmental conservation, and healthcare. Koech noted that ongoing collaborations are already improving healthcare systems and boosting Kenya’s green growth agenda.
“I appreciated Dr. Bernett’s commitment to advancing our shared goals of peace, security, innovation, and prosperity. Our meeting reaffirmed our resolve to deepen Kenya–UK relations further,” Koech said.
The legislator concluded by reiterating Parliament’s support for initiatives that enhance regional stability, economic growth, and stronger bilateral ties, expressing optimism that the renewed partnership would deliver meaningful outcomes for ordinary citizens.
