Residents of Kikuyu, Kiambu County, were left in shock after an explosive mortar artillery shell was discovered in the area on Thursday. The device, believed to be a remnant of past military activity, was found by locals who promptly alerted the authorities.
Confirming the incident, Kikuyu Sub-County Police Commander Joseph Ndege said the object was highly explosive and posed a serious threat to public safety. He urged residents to remain cautious and avoid handling or tampering with any unfamiliar metallic objects that could resemble explosives.
“The device is extremely dangerous. We urge members of the public to immediately report any suspicious items to the nearest police station rather than attempting to move or examine them,” Ndege stated.
Police officers swiftly secured the scene and called in bomb disposal experts from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to safely detonate the shell. Investigations are underway to establish how the device ended up in the area.
The discovery has sparked concern among locals, with security officials reminding Kenyans that remnants of old munitions can still be found in various parts of the country. Authorities continue to emphasize vigilance as part of efforts to prevent accidental explosions and ensure community safety.
