Kenya’s First Lady, Rachel Ruto, turned heads and stirred national pride as she stepped out in a bold and symbolic outfit during the 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations held in Homa Bay County on Sunday, June 1.
Accompanying President William Ruto, the First Lady departed from her usual conservative style to embrace a look that was both modern and deeply patriotic. Her floor-length gown paid tribute to the Kenyan flag, featuring the iconic national colours—black, red, and green—arranged in a striking palm-leaf motif. The pattern not only provided visual flair but also evoked the strength, unity, and fertility that these colours represent in the Kenyan context.
The silhouette of the dress was carefully tailored to flatter the First Lady’s figure, with a fitted bodice and hips and a gentle flare at the hem for graceful movement. A particularly unique feature of the ensemble was its asymmetrical sleeve design—one long, embroidered black sleeve paired with a vibrant red printed sleeve on the opposite arm. This thoughtful contrast added a sophisticated edge to the outfit and reflected the dynamic spirit of the occasion.

The Madaraka Day celebrations, held under the theme “Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs,” drew both local dignitaries and international guests, including Slovenia’s President Dr Nataša Pirc Musar, the day’s guest of honour. The event marked 62 years since Kenya attained self-governance from British colonial rule.
In a reflective statement, the First Lady urged Kenyans to embrace unity and honour past sacrifices. “Today, we celebrate our journey of self-governance and unity. Let us honour the sacrifices of our heroes by building a stronger, more inclusive nation,” she said.
