The former Prime Minister and long-time opposition leader passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, while receiving emergency treatment at Devamatha Hospital in Kerala, India. His death has drawn widespread tributes from leaders across the continent, who described him as a freedom fighter, reformist, and unifying figure whose influence extended far beyond Kenya’s borders.
The state funeral, coordinated by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga, features full military honours, hymns, and tributes from both local and international leaders. The sombre yet celebratory ceremony marks the final farewell to a man whose political life helped shape Kenya’s democratic journey.
