The Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph (FSJ) have condemned a viral video that shows a nun slapping her colleague.
The video, which spread quickly on social media, shows a senior sister confronting a younger one. She shouts commands and strikes her twice. In distress, the younger nun pleads: “Why are you beating me? Why are you beating me in front of workers?”
Incident Sparks Outrage
The cause of the conflict is still unclear. However, the congregation has confirmed that both women belong to the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph Community. The footage drew widespread outrage, with many questioning how such violence could happen within a religious order.
Official Statement from FSJ
In a statement, Sister Mary Goretty Ochieng, FSJ, the Superior General of St. Teresa’s Covenant in Asumbi, strongly condemned the act.
“The Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph have become aware of a deeply regrettable incident involving one of our members physically assaulting a younger Sister, a clip of which has circulated widely on social media,” the statement read.
She stressed that the violent act was a personal failing, not a reflection of their values. “Our charism is joyful love and compassion. Violence in any form is contrary to our way of life,” she added.
Steps Toward Healing
The congregation has apologized to the victim and the public. Sister Goretty said the matter is being handled under Church and Congregational procedures to ensure fairness and dignity for all involved.
The Franciscan Sisters also appealed for unity and prayers. “We ask for prayers for those directly affected and for our Congregation as a whole as we seek healing and reconciliation,” the statement concluded.
The investigation is ongoing, and the congregation has promised to address the matter transparently.
