Opposition leaders Rigathi Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka have officially launched a national campaign to unseat President William Ruto in the 2027 general election, kicking off their “meet the people” tour in Ukambani with a strong message of economic reform and youth empowerment.
Speaking at a rally in Kilome, Makueni County, Gachagua, now the leader of the newly formed Democracy for Citizens Party, declared that the movement to remove Ruto from office had begun. “We are here in Makueni County to announce that the journey to send President William Ruto home has begun,” he told supporters, pledging to restore dignity to Kenyan workers by improving their earnings and welfare.
The leaders were accompanied by a high-powered team including Senators Karungo Thangwa (Kiambu), Dan Maanzo (Makueni), and James Murango (Kirinyaga), MPs Robert Mbui, Geoffrey Wandeto, Wanjiku Muhia, Njeri Maina, former Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi, and a host of MCAs.
Kalonzo Musyoka, the Wiper Party leader, announced plans to rebrand his party to Wiper Patriotic Front, signaling an intention to expand its national appeal beyond Ukambani. “Wiper is not just a Ukambani party. We are targeting a membership of three to four million,” Kalonzo said.
In a passionate tribute to the youth who participated in last year’s Gen Z-led protests, Kalonzo declared June a month of liberation in their honour. “This government does not care about them,” he lamented.
The leaders also criticized recent government empowerment programmes. Kalonzo particularly targeted Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s economic initiatives, questioning the source of funds being distributed. “Take the money if they offer, but vote them out,” he urged residents.
The opposition team is set to continue its tour through Ukambani, with stops in Emali, Makindu, Kibwezi, and Machakos. On Saturday, June 7, the campaign shifts to the Coast, with rallies planned in Voi, Mariakani, Mazeras, and Kisauni, as the opposition seeks to build national momentum ahead of the 2027 elections.
