General Service Unit (GSU) Police Constable Ramadhan Khamisi Matanka, who was fatally speared while on duty at the State House entrance in Nairobi, has been laid to rest at his home in Kajiado County under full Islamic rites. The funeral was attended by relatives, colleagues, and friends, who paid tribute to the fallen officer’s dedication and service.
Tragic Incident at State House
Constable Matanka lost his life after being attacked by 56-year-old Kithuka Kimunyi on Monday morning while manning the main gate along Dennis Pritt Road. The incident occurred around 8:15 a.m. as GSU officers conducted routine security checks on vehicles entering the premises.
According to police reports, the suspect suddenly drew a bow and fired an arrow that struck Matanka on the left side of his chest. The officer sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, where he succumbed during emergency treatment.
Suspect Apprehended
Fellow officers at the scene quickly subdued and arrested Kimunyi, who was later taken into custody for investigations. Preliminary findings indicate that he disguised himself as a street dweller, carrying a sack that concealed the weapon, and hid behind a flower bed before launching the attack.
Witnesses described the chilling scene, noting that the suspect appeared calm before pulling out the spear. Reports also suggest that Kimunyi claimed to have been “sent by a demonic force” to carry out the attack, prompting authorities to assess his mental state as part of the ongoing investigation.
Legal Proceedings and Investigation
On Tuesday, Kimunyi was arraigned at Kibera Law Courts. He appeared frail, wearing a white hoodie and brown trousers, visibly limping and barefoot on one foot. Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and Kilimani Police Division are leading inquiries into the motive and background of the suspect.
Honouring a Dedicated Officer
Constable Matanka’s death has deeply affected the police fraternity. Colleagues remember him as disciplined and committed, with a strong sense of duty. The GSU honoured him with a full gun salute during his burial, commemorating his bravery and service to the nation.
Next Steps
Senior police officials have assured the public that a full investigation into the incident is ongoing, aiming to determine whether the attack was premeditated or influenced by psychological instability. Authorities continue to monitor developments as justice and accountability proceedings unfold.
