She served as a Lecturer and Head of the Department of Hydrology and Aquatic Sciences at South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU). She earned her Ph.D. in Natural Resources and Life Sciences from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Austria, alongside two Master’s degrees in Water and Coastal Management from Cadiz University, Spain, and Environmental Assessment and Management from the University of Bologna, Italy. She completed her undergraduate degree in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences at Moi University, Kenya.
Dr. Nzilani authored more than ten academic publications, which collectively received 52 citations, reflecting her commitment to advancing research in fisheries, aquaculture, and climate change. Over 17 years, she worked both locally and internationally as a consultant, trainer, and capacity builder in natural resource management, climate change, and aquatic sciences. She also contributed to training programs implemented by the Netherlands Organization for International Co-operation in Higher Education (NUFFIC).
In addition to her academic and professional achievements, Dr. Sonia Nzilani founded and chaired the Kibwezi Center for Sustainability, an NGO focused on education, public health, and environmental conservation.
