Former Kesses Member of Parliament Dr. Swarup Mishra has paid a glowing tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as a peacemaker, visionary leader, and global symbol of democracy.
In a heartfelt statement following Raila’s passing on October 15, 2025, in India, Dr. Mishra said Kenya had lost not only a political icon but also a moral compass whose courage and resilience shaped the nation’s democratic journey.
“Raila was not a leader who sought power for its own sake. He fought for democracy, multipartyism, and the freedom of all Kenyans. He was more than a political figure—he was a symbol of peace, forgiveness, and unity,” Mishra said.
The former MP, who served in the 12th Parliament, recalled Raila’s calmness and respect even during divisive political moments, noting his belief in dialogue over confrontation.
“Throughout his career, Raila never insulted anyone. He always chose peace. Even when he disagreed, he did so with respect,” Mishra stated.
Comparing Raila to global icons of justice such as Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr., Mishra said the ODM leader’s name would forever remain etched in the world’s narrative of peace and democratic struggle.
“In history to come, there will be only one Baba. He was a rare leader whose strength came from humility and whose politics was rooted in love for his people,” he added.
Dr. Mishra extended his condolences to Mama Ida Odinga, the Odinga family, and all Kenyans mourning the loss of a leader he described as “the conscience of the nation.”
“Kenya and Africa have lost a true statesman, but the world has gained a legacy that will never fade,” he said.
Raila Odinga will be laid to rest on Sunday, October 19, at his home in Bondo.
