Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep sorrow following the death of Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga, describing him as a “towering statesman and a cherished friend of India.”
In a heartfelt message shared on Wednesday, Modi said he was “deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend and former Prime Minister of Kenya, Mr. Raila Odinga.” He recalled his long-standing friendship with Raila that began during his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat and endured through the years.
“I had the privilege of knowing him closely since my days as Chief Minister of Gujarat, and our association continued over the years,” Modi stated.
The Indian leader praised Raila’s deep admiration for India, noting his affection for the country’s culture, values, and ancient wisdom. “He had a special affection for India, our culture, values, and ancient wisdom,” Modi said, adding that Raila played a key role in strengthening bilateral relations between Kenya and India, especially in cultural exchange, health, and education.
Modi also highlighted Raila’s interest in India’s traditional medicine systems, particularly Ayurveda. “He particularly admired Ayurveda and traditional medicine systems of India, having witnessed their positive impact on his daughter’s health,” Modi added.
Raila Odinga, aged 80, passed away in India due to cardiac arrest. According to Indian outlet Mathrubhumi.com, Raila collapsed during a morning walk on Wednesday at around 8:30 am within the Ayurvedic facility premises. Despite CPR being administered by on-site medical staff and his swift transfer to Devamatha Hospital in Koothattukulam, he was pronounced dead at 9:52 am Indian time.
Prime Minister Modi extended his condolences to Raila’s family, friends, and the people of Kenya, recognizing the profound loss. “I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and to the people of Kenya in this hour of grief,” he said.
Raila’s passing marks the end of a political era in Kenya and Africa, with his global friendships such as with Modi symbolizing his lifelong commitment to democracy and international cooperation.
