Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary (PCS) Musalia Mudavadi has called for the expedited consolidation of processes regarding reforms to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), as part of Africa’s longstanding push for equitable representation on the global stage.
Speaking during a Ministerial meeting of the Committee of Ten (C-10), Mudavadi underscored the need to strengthen and unify efforts that support the Common African Position (CAP) on UNSC reforms. The C-10, a mandate body of the African Union, has been at the forefront of championing Africa’s call for meaningful participation and a permanent seat at the Council.
Mudavadi noted that momentum is building around the need to correct the historical injustice of Africa’s exclusion from permanent membership within the UNSC. He said this drive aligns with the global community’s broader call—captured in the “Pact for the Future”—for a United Nations that is more representative, inclusive, effective, transparent, and accountable.
The PCS emphasized that Africa’s case is unique and should be treated as a priority. He pointed out that the continent continues to contribute significantly to global peacekeeping, diplomacy, and multilateralism, yet remains marginalized in key decision-making bodies.
“To achieve meaningful reform, we must consolidate the various positions and processes that make up the CAP and ensure their timely submission to the Co-Facilitators of the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN),” Mudavadi urged.
He also expressed Kenya’s support for the C-10’s unanimous decision to submit the African Union Model for a Reformed Security Council to the President of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly. The AU Model proposes expanding the UNSC to include at least two permanent seats for Africa with full veto rights, in addition to several non-permanent seats.
Mudavadi’s remarks reinforced the urgent need for reform to reflect modern geopolitical realities and ensure that no region, especially Africa, is left behind in global governance. His message was a strong call for unity, urgency, and bold diplomacy in securing Africa’s rightful place at the UN’s top decision-making table.
