Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen has announced plans for a nationwide transfer of police officers in a move aimed at revitalising morale and improving service delivery within the National Police Service.
Speaking during a Thanksgiving ceremony in Tana River County on Saturday afternoon, Murkomen said the decision followed observations that long stays in one station often led to demoralisation among officers.
“We have realised that one thing that demoralises police officers is the tendency to work in one station for a long period. The police and Kenyans demanded time-to-time transfers to boost the morale of police officers,” Murkomen stated.
The CS revealed that Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja is finalising the transfer arrangements, which will be implemented immediately after the completion of the ongoing police recruitment process.
Murkomen emphasized that the transfers will not only enhance officers’ morale but also promote accountability, efficiency, and community trust in law enforcement.
Alongside the transfer initiative, Murkomen highlighted several other government measures aimed at strengthening the police service. He confirmed that President William Ruto’s administration is in the final phase of implementing a salary increment for all police officers.
“The first and second phases are complete, and the third phase will be done before the end of next year,” Murkomen added.
The CS also addressed the housing challenge facing officers, announcing that construction of 17,000 housing units is currently underway across the country. Additionally, the government is procuring more police vehicles to improve mobility, particularly in marginalised regions such as Tana River and Lamu counties.
Murkomen reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that police officers work under dignified conditions, noting that improved welfare directly translates into enhanced national security and better public service delivery.
