Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo and other lawmakers from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) are demanding swift action from President William Ruto to curb rising cases of human rights violations allegedly perpetrated by state actors. During a press briefing at Parliament Buildings on Monday, Odhiambo decried what she described as a disturbing trend of extrajudicial killings and suppression of dissent under the Kenya Kwanza administration.
“We are witnessing a dangerous rise in human rights abuses. As ODM, we will not remain silent as people’s rights are trampled,” she said.
The MP clarified that ODM’s cooperation with the government does not extend to endorsing intolerance or violating constitutional freedoms. “There is no collaboration about limiting rights. That is not who we are as a party,” she stated.
Odhiambo, who also serves as the Minority Whip in the National Assembly, emphasized that ODM remains firmly rooted in the principles of justice, democracy, and the rule of law. She revealed that she had personally spoken to President Ruto, who assured her of his opposition to such abuses.
“If he truly doesn’t support these violations, then let him act. Let him crack the whip on those responsible,” she urged.
Echoing her sentiments, Seme MP Dr. James Nyikal criticized the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) for failing to act decisively. He called on oversight institutions to uphold their constitutional duty and hold both the commanders and executors of illegal actions accountable.
“We must question the purpose of institutions that cannot protect the citizens they are meant to serve,” Dr. Nyikal said.
The outcry follows the controversial death of 29-year-old Ojwang’ from Homa Bay County, who allegedly died in police custody after being arrested over a social media post. He was reportedly transported over 400 kilometers to Nairobi under unclear circumstances.
“From the moment someone is arrested, their life is in the hands of the police. They must be accountable,” Dr. Nyikal asserted.
The MPs now want urgent investigations and decisive disciplinary action to restore public trust in law enforcement and protect civil liberties.
