Former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo has paid an emotional tribute to the late former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as a towering African statesman whose influence on democracy will endure for generations.
Speaking on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, during a condolence visit to the Odinga family at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Siaya County, Akufo-Addo said Raila’s impact transcended Kenya’s borders and continues to inspire the growth of democratic governance across Africa.
“The man we are mourning is one of the great sons of Africa. His contribution to the growth of democracy in Kenya and on our continent can never be forgotten,” he said.
Akufo-Addo revealed that he travelled from Ghana to personally pay his respects, describing Raila as a continental leader whose courage, integrity, and vision shaped a generation of African politics. He recalled their last engagement during Raila’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, saying Ghana supported his candidacy without hesitation because of his proven leadership qualities.
“I knew he was a man capable of doing the work, and it is with deep satisfaction that I am here to express my condolences to his family and the people of Kenya,” he added.
The former Ghanaian president was accompanied by a delegation that included National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, KANU Chairman Gideon Moi, Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, Environment Cabinet Secretary Deborah Mulongo, and former West Pokot Senator Samuel Poghisio.
Despite heavy rains, mourners continued to gather at the Odinga homestead to honour Raila’s enduring legacy. Wetang’ula described him as “a true giant of Kenya’s democratic journey”, urging leaders to uphold Raila’s ideals of peace, unity, and justice.
He noted that the continued flow of mourners demonstrated the profound respect and love Raila commanded across Kenya and beyond, a reflection of a life dedicated to the service of his nation and continent.
