Tension gripped Turkana South on Thursday, October 23, after angry residents took to the streets to protest the alleged killing of two National Police Reservists (NPRs) by Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel.
The two officers were reportedly shot dead on Wednesday, October 22, while returning home from duty at the Lokwar Irrigation Scheme, where they had been providing security. Witnesses claim that the NPRs, who were in full uniform and armed with government-issued firearms, were confronted and fatally shot by KDF soldiers on patrol.
According to eyewitness accounts, one of the officers was shot in the head, while the other sustained fatal gunshot wounds to the chest and leg. Their bodies were later recovered near Aroo Sub-County in Turkana South.
Following the incident, residents blocked the Kaputir-Kapenguria Road using stones and lit bonfires, paralyzing transport and vowing not to clear the road until justice is served. Videos circulating online show locals chanting and demanding accountability from the government.
Turkana South Member of Parliament John Ariko condemned the killings, describing them as “senseless and heartbreaking.” He accused the KDF of turning against the very citizens it is mandated to protect.
“It is deeply disheartening that KDF, whose constitutional duty is to safeguard the nation, has instead become a source of fear and insecurity for the Turkana community,” Ariko said.
The MP urged the Ministry of Interior and the National Government to withdraw all security personnel stationed in Aroo Sub-County and ensure a thorough investigation into the killings.
“Our hearts mourn tonight for the two gallant officers who paid the ultimate price while serving their country. Their deaths must not be in vain justice must prevail,” Ariko added.
As of now, the Kenya Defence Forces have not issued an official statement regarding the allegations, while police have confirmed that investigations into the deaths are underway.
