Former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has paid a heartfelt tribute to Zambia’s former President Edgar Lungu, who passed away on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at the age of 68. In a statement posted on X, Uhuru described Lungu as a “man of humility, wisdom, and unwavering faith,” and a leader who served his nation with honor and distinction.
“President Lungu was not only a distinguished statesman who served his country with dedication and honour but also a man of humility, wisdom, and unwavering faith,” Uhuru wrote.
Lungu, who led Zambia from 2015 to 2021, assumed office following the death of President Michael Sata. He later secured a full term in the 2016 general election. Despite losing the presidency to Hakainde Hichilema in 2021, Lungu remained a notable political figure. He re-emerged in 2023 to align with the opposition, signaling a return to active politics after a brief hiatus.
While the cause of his death has not been officially disclosed, it is understood that Lungu had been undergoing medical treatment in recent weeks.
In his tribute, Uhuru Kenyatta highlighted Lungu’s efforts to unite Zambia and his calm, measured leadership style. “His commitment to the prosperity and unity of Zambia was evident throughout his presidency,” said Uhuru. “His calm, measured leadership will be remembered by all who knew and worked with him.”
Uhuru also spoke on a more personal note, mourning not only a fellow leader but a close friend. “I mourn a trusted friend and fondly recall his visits to Kenya and the moments we shared discussing the future of our continent, the role of youth, and the importance of building bridges across our nations,” he said.
The former Kenyan president extended his condolences to Lungu’s family and the Zambian people. “My thoughts and prayers are with his beloved wife, Mama Esther Lungu, their children, and the people of Zambia during this difficult time,” he added.
Lungu leaves behind a legacy marked by dedication to national unity and a continued interest in Africa’s development even beyond his presidency.
