Former National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) Vice Chairperson Wambui Nyutu has hit out at the commission over her removal, labeling the decision as unlawful, biased, and politically driven.
In a strongly worded statement on Wednesday, Nyutu expressed shock at learning of her dismissal through media reports following a press release by NCIC on July 22. “It is with utter shock and dismay that I have learnt through the media of the Commission’s repressive, and unfortunate ‘unanimous’ decision to relieve me of my duties,” she stated.
Nyutu accused the NCIC of failing to follow due process, alleging that she was not informed of any proceedings or allegations against her. She termed the decision as a “blatant violation” of the rule of law and her constitutional rights. “The Commission’s failure to notify me of any such proceedings… is uncivil and a blatant disregard of constitutional procedures,” she said.
She further condemned the move as politically motivated, arguing that NCIC should embody unity rather than exclusion. “We live in a democratic society… NCIC is a Commission that ought to be a unifying factor within our Nation,” she noted.
Despite the setback, Nyutu remained defiant. “The storms have raged… yet I stand, a soul forged in fire, unshaken by the weight of injustice,” she declared.
However, the NCIC defended its decision, citing Nyutu’s continued involvement in partisan political activities. In a statement, Chairperson Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia said her actions breached her oath of office and the law. “Her conduct had become untenable and incompatible with the impartiality required of all commissioners,” he said.
According to the commission, Nyutu had previously been cautioned in three Special Meetings held earlier in the year but failed to uphold her commitment to political neutrality.
Dr. Dorcas Kedogo has been appointed as the new Vice Chairperson, effective immediately.
The commission has also begun formal procedures to remove Nyutu from her role as commissioner under Section 23 of the National Cohesion and Integration Act.
