Kenya’s celebrated footballing family, the Wanyamas, is in deep mourning following the passing of their matriarch, Mildred Wanyama. She died in the early hours of Saturday, with her remains currently preserved at the Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi.
In a heartfelt statement, her son, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Vice President MacDonald Mariga, confirmed the tragic news.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, who left us peacefully today morning. We are currently making arrangements and will share more details soon,” he said.
Mildred Wanyama was not only a cherished mother but also the pillar of a family that has produced two of Kenya’s most iconic footballers MacDonald Mariga and Victor Mugubi Wanyama.
Mariga, the eldest, made history as the first Kenyan to play in the UEFA Champions League and went on to enjoy a successful career in the Italian Serie A with stints at Inter Milan and Parma, among other clubs. His younger brother, Victor Wanyama, rose to prominence in the English Premier League with Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur, later captaining the national team, Harambee Stars. He also starred for Celtic FC in the Scottish Premiership, earning legendary status in Kenyan football.
Mildred Wanyama was known for her quiet strength and unwavering support for her children’s ambitions, especially in sports. Family friends describe her as a warm, prayerful, and devoted woman who valued humility and discipline traits reflected in her sons’ illustrious careers.
The passing of the Wanyama matriarch has drawn condolences from across the Kenyan sports fraternity, with many paying tribute to her role in nurturing talent and instilling strong values in her children.
