National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has accused the Opposition of orchestrating a campaign to incite voter anger and tribal animosity ahead of the 2027 General Elections. Speaking during a church fundraiser at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Njoro, Nakuru County, Wetang’ula warned that the Opposition was fueling emotional and divisive politics that could jeopardize Kenya’s hard-won stability.
“The Opposition is on a calculated charm offensive, weaponizing voter anger and hatred ahead of 2027,” Wetang’ula told congregants. He cautioned voters against making decisions at the ballot driven by vengeance or tribal considerations, warning such emotions could usher in unqualified leaders and destabilize the country.
He invoked the painful memories of the 2007/08 post-election violence, reminding the audience that Njoro was among the hardest-hit areas during that turbulent period. “Njoro paid a heavy price for tribal-driven politics. Let us not allow history to repeat itself,” he said.
Wetang’ula strongly criticized leaders engaging in ethnic-based campaigns, stating that their actions threatened national cohesion. “Even if you’re desperate for the presidency, do not use your ambition to undermine our national unity. Kenya belongs to all of us,” he said firmly.
He also praised ODM leader Raila Odinga for his recent cooperation with President William Ruto, describing the gesture as a patriotic move that prioritizes national stability over partisan interests. “Those castigating Raila Odinga for working with President Ruto are not interested in Kenya’s future they thrive on discord and dysfunction,” Wetang’ula remarked.
He was accompanied by several MPs, including Njoro MP Charity Kathambi, Kimilili’s Didmus Barasa, Webuye East’s Martin Pepela, and Nakuru County MP Liza Chelule. The legislators echoed Wetang’ula’s message, calling for peace, merit-based leadership, and an end to divisive politics.
“Nakuru has rejected tribalism. We elect leaders based on merit, not ethnicity that’s the future we must all embrace,” Chelule said, as others urged Kenyans to uphold unity and resist political manipulation.
