National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has called on Kenyans living abroad to ignore divisive and “visionless” political rhetoric, urging them instead to continue playing a vital role in building the nation through diaspora remittances.
Speaking during a Women Empowerment Forum held at Nyamache grounds in Kisii County on Saturday, Wetang’ula lauded the diaspora community for their significant contribution to Kenya’s economy through foreign exchange.
“Kenya is home, and the money received from abroad in dollars helps stabilise the economy,” he said, emphasizing that such support is crucial for national development.
He dismissed leaders discouraging diaspora investment in Kenya, accusing them of misleading the public and lacking vision. He particularly commended Kisii residents for effectively using remittances to start and expand farming and business ventures, citing the region’s fertile land and reliable rainfall as strong foundations for agricultural success.
“Some of these businesses thrive because of the startup capital sent by our children living in different countries,” Wetang’ula noted, pointing to crops such as bananas, avocados, and sugarcane as key contributors to the region’s growth.
The Speaker also assured residents that tea bonuses would be reviewed to ensure equitable payments across the country. “What goes to the market mirrors what Kenya produces,” he said.
Wetang’ula was joined by several national and local leaders, all echoing the message of economic empowerment and unity. Kisii Woman Representative Dorice Donya championed structured empowerment of community groups to advance the Kenya Kwanza Government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
National Assembly Chief Whip Sylvanus Osoro affirmed his support for the current administration and encouraged open political expression. “We stand to gain as a community when we support other political formations,” he said.
Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot urged the Gusii community to avoid political manipulation, while Migori Senator Eddy Oketch condemned tribal politics and called for unity.
Kwanza MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi concluded by stressing the need for issue-based politics. “The Kenya Kwanza leadership is delivering. President Ruto is determined to meet his agenda,” he said.
The forum emphasized the role of collaboration, diaspora support, and grassroots empowerment in shaping Kenya’s future.
