President William Ruto on Wednesday bid farewell to Marc Dillard, the outgoing Chargé d’Affaires of the United States to Kenya, marking the end of Dillard’s diplomatic tenure in the country.
Dillard, a seasoned career diplomat, took on the role of Chargé d’Affaires after the resignation of former US Ambassador Meg Whitman in November 2024. He previously served as Whitman’s deputy during her two-year tenure, which was marked by increased bilateral engagement between Nairobi and Washington.
During a farewell meeting held at State House, Nairobi, President Ruto commended Dillard for his efforts in strengthening Kenya–US relations, highlighting the enduring partnership between the two nations. “We value our strong and mutually beneficial diplomatic ties with the United States,” Ruto said in a statement following their meeting.
The discussions centered on key areas of collaboration, including trade, investment, regional security, and support for multilateral peacekeeping efforts. Ruto reiterated Kenya’s commitment to deepening economic cooperation with the US, particularly through his administration’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), with a focus on the creative economy.
“We are committed to deepening our collaboration in trade and investment, and to expand opportunities and prosperity for our people,” the President noted.
The two leaders also discussed peace and security initiatives, especially Kenya’s leadership in supporting the Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission in Haiti, a key area of Kenya-US cooperation in global peacekeeping.
Dillard’s departure comes at a time of significant diplomatic and economic engagements between Kenya and the United States, including President Ruto’s recent state visit to Washington, D.C., and increased American investments in Kenya’s technology and health sectors.
As Dillard exits the diplomatic stage, the US State Department is expected to announce a new ambassador to Kenya, ensuring continuity in the strategic partnership between the two countries.
Dillard leaves behind a legacy of steady diplomatic leadership, having played a pivotal role in managing relations during a period of transition and growing cooperation. His contributions have been lauded by both governments, underscoring the deep and evolving ties between Kenya and the United States.
