President William Ruto has condemned the fatal shooting of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were, describing it as a targeted and alarming act of violence against a sitting lawmaker. In a heartfelt condolence message on Thursday, the President mourned the loss of the legislator and extended his sympathies to his family and constituents.
“May God grant the family and the people of Kasipul strength to bear with the loss of Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were,” said Ruto.
The President also called on the National Police Service to launch an urgent and comprehensive investigation into the killing. He emphasized that the perpetrators must be brought to justice without delay.
“We urge the police to conduct a thorough investigation into this incident. Those responsible must be held to account,” he said.
According to the National Police Service, the shooting occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday night along Ngong Road near the City Mortuary roundabout. A white Toyota Crown vehicle, in which the MP was a passenger, had stopped at a red traffic light when it was approached by a motorcycle carrying two individuals.
Police reports indicate that the pillion passenger dismounted, approached the vehicle, and opened fire at the passenger side before fleeing on the motorcycle with the rider. Eyewitnesses say the attack was swift and appeared meticulously planned.
The driver of the vehicle and another male passenger, who were both unharmed, rushed the injured MP to Nairobi Hospital. Unfortunately, Ong’ondo was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga confirmed that initial investigations suggest the attack was both “targeted and predetermined.” The motive behind the brazen assassination remains unclear, but the nature of the incident has sent shockwaves through the political establishment and the nation at large.
Security agencies are under pressure to expedite their investigations as leaders and citizens demand accountability. The death of Ong’ondo has sparked fears over the safety of public officials and the rise of politically motivated violence.
As the country mourns the loss of a public servant, many are watching closely to see if justice will be served.
