President William Ruto has issued a stern warning to individuals who used recent demonstrations to perpetrate criminal acts, vowing that they will be held fully accountable under the law. Speaking at State House Nairobi during a meeting with top national and regional security chiefs on Saturday, the President underscored the government’s commitment to protecting the lives and property of all Kenyans.
Ruto directed security agencies to arrest and prosecute individuals who looted, robbed, committed arson, and even rape during the protests that rocked the country earlier in the week. “If those behind the riots that led to looting and destruction of people’s property are not arrested and prosecuted, we will be breeding impunity,” he stated.
He condemned attacks on police officers during the protests, warning that such acts pose a serious threat to national peace and stability. “We cannot have a country where criminals run after our police officers. If a policeman’s life is in danger, how can our families be safe?” the President asked.
President Ruto reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting police and security personnel, emphasizing the importance of a stable security environment for national development. He said the government is investing in modern equipment and advanced training to empower officers to tackle emerging crimes, including terrorism and cyber threats.
The President also called on Parliament to enact legislation to regulate demonstrations. While affirming Article 37 of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to assembly and protest, Ruto said regulation was necessary to balance civil liberties with public safety. He proposed that the law should require organisers to register protests, indicate venues, and specify the time of the demonstrations.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen echoed the President’s sentiments, questioning why civil society and religious leaders had remained silent in the face of violent attacks against police officers.
Also present at the meeting were Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, Inspector-General Douglas Kanja, Deputy IG Gilbert Masengeli, and DCI Director Mohamed Amin.
Separately, President Ruto commended the Kenya Defence Forces for their dedication, urging the newly appointed military leadership to uphold professionalism and integrity in service to the nation.
