The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has shortlisted 100 candidates for interviews for appointment as Judges of the High Court of Kenya. Among the notable names on the list is former Nyeri Woman Representative Priscilla Nyokabi Kanyua, a lawyer and governance advocate known for her contributions to human rights and legislative reforms.
The shortlist, announced in a public notice on Thursday, October 23, 2025, follows a competitive recruitment process to fill 20 High Court judge vacancies. The JSC revealed that it had received 377 applications by the close of submissions on July 7, 2025, after an initial call for applications published on June 9.
According to the Commission, the shortlisted individuals were selected after a detailed review to ensure compliance with constitutional and professional requirements. The interviews are set to be conducted in the coming weeks.
The 100 shortlisted candidates represent a diverse mix of serving magistrates, judicial officers, practicing advocates, and public service lawyers, showcasing Kenya’s wide legal expertise.
Among the serving magistrates who made the cut are Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina, Esther Boke, David Wanjohi Mbiru, Harrison Onwimba Barasa, Nathan Shiundu Lutta, Letizia Muthoni Wachira Rwiga, and Alex Kimanzi Ithuku. Their inclusion underscores the Commission’s recognition of judicial officers seeking elevation to the High Court bench.
Alongside Nyokabi, other seasoned advocates in litigation and constitutional law such as Henry Faraj Chipinde, Patricia Naeku Leparashao, and Anne Mary Apondi Okothuyi have also been shortlisted.
The list further features emerging legal scholars like Dr. Andrew Barney Wanjala Khakula, Dr. Nahili Mokaya Orina, and Andrew Chege Waitaira, who have contributed significantly to public policy and legal reforms.
The final appointments are expected to strengthen Kenya’s judiciary by enhancing efficiency and broadening representation in the High Court.
