Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has issued a stern warning to political leaders in Homa Bay County against engaging in or inciting political violence following the shocking assassination of Kasipul Member of Parliament Ong’ondo Were.
Speaking during a visit to Rangwe Constituency on Saturday, PS Omollo affirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring justice is served in the murder case. He disclosed that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is in the advanced stages of its probe and has already identified potential suspects. “No one is above the law. The government will ensure those responsible for the killing of MP Were are arrested and brought before the courts,” he stated.
Were was gunned down on Thursday evening along Ngong Road in Nairobi in a brazen attack that has sparked outrage and heightened political tensions, particularly in his home county of Homa Bay. Eyewitness reports indicate that the MP was attacked by gunmen riding a motorcycle, who immediately fled the scene after opening fire. The suspects remain at large as investigations intensify.
PS Omollo emphasized that while the security agencies work around the clock to apprehend the culprits, local leaders must take responsibility for calming tensions on the ground. “I urge politicians in Homa Bay to desist from spreading propaganda or statements that could incite unrest. This is not the time for finger-pointing or political games,” he said.
He further warned that the government would not tolerate any attempts to destabilize peace in the region under the guise of political activism. “Anyone found engaging in acts of violence or incitement will face the full force of the law,” Omollo declared.
The assassination of MP Were has left the nation in shock, with leaders from across the political divide condemning the act and calling for swift justice. As the DCI continues to follow leads in the case, national focus remains fixed on ensuring the perpetrators are held accountable and that peace prevails in affected areas.
Omollo’s remarks signal the government’s intention to prioritize security and stability amid growing public concern over political violence and targeted killings.
