Public viewing of the body of former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga began today at the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Mamboleo, Kisumu, drawing thousands of mourners from across the country.
The viewing commenced after a brief delay following a minor disruption, which was swiftly contained by Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo, Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo, and Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli.
In his address to the mourners, Otiende Amollo urged calm and respect for Mama Ida Odinga’s call for peaceful and dignified mourning. “Let us respect Mama Ida. If we are not organised, we might not get the chance to view the body of Raila,” he cautioned.
Otiende also appealed to leaders present to give way to the public, noting that most had already viewed the body during the parliamentary session in Nairobi. PS Omollo requested Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o to assist in leading other leaders out of the main tent to ensure a smooth and orderly process.
Among the first dignitaries to view the body were Raila Odinga Junior, Prof. Nyong’o, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, and Senator Prof. Tom Ojienda.
Notably absent were Ida Odinga, Dr. Oburu Oginga, and Ruth Odinga. Governor Wanga and Kisumu West MP Rosa Buyu were visibly emotional as they paid their respects.
Outside the stadium, thousands who had gathered since dawn carried flags, portraits, and twigs while chanting “Baba!” in tribute to the late opposition leader.
Security was tight, with police and military personnel manning all entrances and ensuring orderly crowd control. The viewing will continue throughout the day before the body proceeds to other national farewell ceremonies ahead of burial in Bondo, Siaya County.
