Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga visited the Nairobi home of slain Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were to offer his condolences to the grieving family. This was the first time Raila met the family since Were’s tragic murder on April 30, 2025, which has left the country in shock.
The ODM leader described Were as a courageous and honest leader who served his people with unwavering dedication during his time in Parliament. “He was a man of integrity, always committed to his constituents and a strong advocate for their needs,” Raila remarked. Were had been serving his second term in Parliament after being elected on an ODM ticket.
The slain legislator was killed in a targeted shooting along Valley Road near the City Mortuary in Nairobi, as he was caught in a traffic jam. He was shot five times, with the bullets causing severe damage to vital organs, including his heart. The police investigation into his death is ongoing, with authorities suspecting the involvement of an organized criminal network. The police also confirmed that they are looking for more suspects, including a police officer, who is believed to have played a central role in orchestrating the killing.
In connection with the investigation, the driver and bodyguard of Were have been arrested and are being questioned by detectives after providing inconsistent statements. They are currently being treated as persons of interest in the case.
A requiem mass for the late MP will be held on May 7, 2025, at the Consolata Shrine in Nairobi, where family, friends, and political leaders will gather to honor his memory. Ong’ondo Were will be laid to rest on Friday, May 9, in his home village of Kachien, Kasipul Constituency, where he will be remembered as a dedicated public servant who lost his life under tragic circumstances.
As the investigation continues, many await answers regarding the motive behind his killing and the individuals responsible for such a heinous act.
