Raila Odinga Junior has paid an emotional yet celebratory tribute to his late father, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as a true patriot and Pan-Africanist who dedicated his life to Kenya’s democracy.
Speaking during the funeral service held on Saturday, Raila Junior said the family and the nation are no longer mourning but celebrating the impactful life that Raila lived.
“We are no longer mourning Jakom, but we are celebrating his life today as we give him a final send-off,” Raila Jr said.
He acknowledged the overwhelming support the family received from across the country and beyond, noting that Kenyans had mourned Raila deeply since his passing on October 15 while undergoing treatment in India.
Raila Junior also expressed gratitude to President William Ruto, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, and the government for their support during the funeral preparations.
“We have received support from President Ruto and the government, which has enabled us to give our father a decent send-off befitting his stature,” he added.
Winnie Odinga, Raila’s youngest daughter, echoed her brother’s sentiments, thanking President Ruto for standing with their family during the difficult time.
“We honour you for the support and good work to our family. The King is gone; long live the crown,” she said.
Rosemary Odinga described her father as a loving and devoted parent who always stood for justice and equality. She urged Kenyans to emulate his courage and commitment to democracy.
The funeral service was attended by President William Ruto, DP Kithure Kindiki, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, among other dignitaries a testament to Raila’s towering legacy in Kenyan and African politics.
