Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has met Japanese economist Prof Hiroyuki Hino, who was his Economic Affairs Advisor from 2008 to 2013. Prof Hino also served as Senior Advisor for Strategic Initiatives and Economy when William Ruto was Deputy President.
Raila hosted Prof Hino on Monday in the company of Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang Nyong’o and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei. “I had the honour of hosting Prof Hiroyuki Hino, my former Economic Affairs Advisor, for a thoughtful and engaging visit,” Raila said. “Our discussions offered deep reflections on policy, leadership, and public service. I am grateful for the opportunity to reconnect and look forward to continued dialogue and collaboration.”
Prof Hino left Kenya in 2014 after resigning from his role under Ruto. He returned to Yale University and has lectured at universities in South Africa. After his departure, Ruto’s then-spokesperson clarified that Hino left at the end of his contract and was replaced by the Japan International Cooperation Agency’s (JICA) Research Institute.
The presence of Felix Koskei at the meeting has sparked speculation that Kenya may consider Prof Hino’s expertise in the future. Hino has previously worked with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and JICA, making him a valuable resource in strategic economic planning.
In 2019, Prof Hino edited the book “From Divided Pasts to Cohesive Futures: Reflections on Africa”. The book explores how ethnic diversity affects economic growth in Africa. It features contributions from over 20 historians, economists, and political scientists. The work offers insights on social cohesion and Africa’s development prospects.
The meeting reflects Raila’s interest in evidence-based policy and strategic economic planning. By reconnecting with Prof Hino, Raila signals the importance of collaboration across political and professional lines. It also highlights the ongoing need for expert advice in shaping Kenya’s economic and social policies.
