Officers in full ceremonial uniform lined up in perfect formation early Thursday morning, awaiting the arrival of a Kenya Airways flight bearing Raila’s remains from India.
The air around the airport was filled with solemnity as a military band performed soft dirges, symbolizing a nation in mourning. A polished gun carriage, draped in the national colors, stood ready to carry the casket once it arrived a fitting tribute to a man whose political influence shaped Kenya’s history for decades.
According to officials, the Kenya Airways flight designated RAO001 a special call sign created from Raila’s initials was scheduled to land at 9:30 a.m. The symbolic call sign was adopted to honor his lifelong service and sacrifice for the nation.
President William Ruto is expected to lead senior government officials, military chiefs, members of Raila’s family, opposition leaders, and diplomats in receiving the body. The event, though brief, carries immense historical and emotional weight, marking the start of a series of state funeral ceremonies to celebrate the life and legacy of the late leader.
Security at JKIA and its surroundings has been significantly tightened, with both the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and police coordinating operations to ensure order.
Raila Odinga passed away on Wednesday while undergoing treatment in India. President Ruto announced that the former Prime Minister would be accorded a state funeral with full military honors, a gesture recognizing his decades of dedication to Kenya’s democratic struggle and unity.
